In my opinion recruitment in the Hospitality industry includes restaurants, hotels, caterers and pubs/bars. These areas obviously include Spa's, catering agencies, party organisers and any job related to those areas.
It is essentially done the same as any other industry by using an agency which would involve a fee, or going through recruiting process yourself. There are many positives to using an agency as an employer, these include: Reducing advertising costs; Increase choice of candidates for a given job; saves valuable management time. There are also many negatives to using an agency, these can include: Expensive Fees; Lost time if they are unable to find the right candidate; Expenses and be large if right candidate cannot be found. Agencies are essentially there to find the correct candidates for you with regards to expertise and personality. This can be more difficult than it sounds so it is important to find an agency that you can trust to find you someone that fits. This is most true when the costs are high. Agencies should save you time and thus money overall, so bare this in mind when choosing.
If you do not want to use an agency then what are the options available to you? Well you can use a job website, there are many about but beware of the costs involved. Some can charge as much as £150 to advertise one vacancy. That is a lot for one vacancy, but look around there are some that are free to use, but be aware that you can, “get what you pay for”!
The Hospitality industry is by its nature a volatile beast. This is no different when it comes to recruitment and the people associated with the industry. For example, if you own a restaurant but you are not the chef, how do you keep their loyalty? After all if they are good then you want to keep them don’t you!? If they are good people will know about it and may offer a better package to poach them, or they may want to setup by themselves! So how do you sustain loyalty and commitment is something you may want to think about in detail.
As a jobseeker you have many options open to you. Most websites allow you to upload a CV that employers or agencies can search and contact you directly. There are other areas open to you now in terms of social media, doing a quick search on LinkedIn for Restaurants Manchester will bring up all people, companies, groups associated with Restaurants in Manchester. This means that you could link up and send direct messages to managers for work. So for example if you are a chef looking for jobs in London, you could approach it like this. From experience employers like someone who is assertive (it also stops them using an agency and paying a fee for their services), and you never know they might invite you for an interview.
So it doesn’t matter where you are, London, Manchester, Liverpool or Leeds there is an option for you.
