Does your attitude help your career?

I read a Blog today with the title of, "Why Being a 'Giver' Helps your career"

My first experience with this thought when I was at a Networking group meeting a couple of years back (I was a SEO exec and selling the company's services). I went to the 1st few meetings. I hadn't attended any networking events before and I was eager to go back to the office with some business for the boss. So I worked on my small 60 second pitch and aimed to impress the group members with my knowledge, sense of humour and humility. Ha ha, I thought, "Yes I'm ready to impress"! So after some early introductions and pleasantries it was my time to deliver the pitch I had prepared. I aced it and sitting down after a ripple of applause I thought that new business would flow in. But actually the opposite happened and the same for the next 3 weeks. My boss wasn't happy and couldn't see the value in the group, but I knew there was business to be had there!

So what was the problem. I knew these people but I wasn't developing any relationships within the group. Everyone was friendly but I wasn't getting close to getting any business from them. Therefore things had to change and my realisation occurred in the next meeting when a new person delivered his 1st pitch. It was marvellous and the story he told was interesting and engaging, but I was put off as it was too sales related. So what could he have done different? What I wanted from him is to show me what they can do, give me some knowledge and then prove the concept. mmmmm Light bulb turned on!

So when it was my turn I illustrated SEO on the whiteboard that was available and said, "would anyone like help with their SEO?", everyone put their hand up! I focussed on one of them and illustrated how we reviewed their SEO and their closest competitors and showed them how to improve it to compete with their competitors. They were happy and I had shown value. Every week I gave more knowledge to them and as the weeks rolled by I began to get more and more referrals.

So what happened? Well I was demonstrating my skills and knowledge without threatening the group, demonstrating that my main concern was to advance the groups interests, adding value! In that situation I was asking more questions and I was showing sincere interest in others, which in turn increased my influence within the group while earning trust.
