Drinking Tea Lowers Risk of Glaucoma

Drinking Tea Lowers Risk of Glaucoma

This week on the 15th December we saw world International Tea day on Twitter #InternationalTeaDay.

This brought out a lot of news regarding Tea and its health benefits. A recent study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology suggested that a hot cup of tea can lower the risk of glaucoma. Although a link has been found between Tea and lowering the risk of Glaucoma, experts are still saying that there is no evidence a it will help protect you from the disease.

Glaucoma is an eye condition in which the pressure of fluids inside the eye damages the optic nerve and can lead to blindness if left untreated.

The risk of glaucoma increases with age although it can also affect babies and children. Approximately 58 million people are thought to have the condition worldwide, so its fairly well spread.

The study said there was no link between drinking coffee, soft drinks or iced tea and glaucoma, whether the drinks were decaffeinated or not, nor between glaucoma and decaffeinated hot tea.
The team suggested that there did appear to be a link to hot tea, with people consuming more than six cups of Hot Tea a week less likely to have the condition even when factors such as age, BMI, smoking and diabetes were taken into account.
It was also suggested that certain plant chemicals such as flavonoids and many other antioxidants found in a hot cup of caffeinated tea could be offering a protective effect, also adding that caffeinated tea might be richer in antioxidants than decaffeinated tea.
With evidence that the Drinking Tea Lowers Risk of Glaucoma, it seems that the worlds addiction to coffee might actually be best served by being addicted to tea.
